Morocco, Land of Football

Football field

The Atlas Lions made the football world vibrate during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Their historic achievement made Moroccans dream and united them around common values of sharing, joy, and passion. Between Morocco and football, a love story and challenges. A story that reminds us that nothing is impossible: “We dream big”.

The Morocco, Land of Light, has always shone in major global sporting events. Thanks to the vision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, the efforts of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation, and the passion of the people, Moroccan football has always provided fans of the round ball with moments of pure joy, breathtaking moments.

The Morocco has always been a source of inspiration for African football. A retrospective of achievements is necessary:

In 1976, the Atlas Lions won the Africa Cup of Nations held in Ethiopia.

In the rearview mirror of 1986, Morocco was the first African country to advance past the first round of a World Cup, later eliminated by the German Mannschaft.

The Morocco and its national clubs continued to make history. In 2013, Marrakech hosted another achievement: the final of the Club World Cup between Raja Casablanca and Bayern Munich. A breathtaking match where the Rajaouis excelled and made history as the first African team to reach the final of this competition by defeating prestigious clubs like the Brazilian Atletico Mineiro of the famous player Ronaldinho.

In 2022, the National team of Morocco rewrote history, opening a new chapter for Arab and African football. Led by the coach Walid Regragui, it was the first African nation to reach the semi-finals of the World Cup and to belong to the "golden square" of this great sporting event.

The Moroccan football is brilliant on all fronts. By winning the intercontinental tournament in Thailand in 2022, the Futsal team climbed to the 8th rank in the world with a record of two African championships (2016, 2020) and two Arab Nations Championships (2021, 2022). The Beach soccer team reached the semi-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations and the Lionesses of the Atlas were crowned vice-champions of Africa in 2022, thereby securing their ticket to the World Cup in Australia 2023.

The Moroccan clubs are the most decorated on the continent. Wydad Athletic Club (WAC) has won several titles in this regard: the African Champions Cup (1992, 2017, 2022) and the African Super Cup (2018). As the Grand Champion of Africa, WAC celebrated its second participation in the 2023 Club World Cup held in Morocco.

The success of Raja Club Athletic (RCA) resonates just as much throughout Africa. The Green Eagles have won several titles: The African Super Cup (2000), The African Champions Cup (1989, 1997, 1999) and the Arab Champions League (2006).

Also, the Moroccan supporters at the 2022 World Cup played an essential role since the beginning of the World Cup and were the "TWELFTH MAN" behind the Atlas Lions.

The Renaissance Sportive de Berkane (RSB), a historic club in the Oriental region, is multiplying its exploits. In 2020, the club won the African Confederation Cup and later repeated its feat in 2022. In the same year, it was crowned winner of the African Super Cup.

These achievements are the result of long-term work carried out by the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF), which has invested in infrastructure, equipment, and training centers, true nurseries of champions, heroes capable of rising to challenges and making the Moroccan people dream.

Terra of exploits

The Morocco shone with a thousand lights. Billions of views, likes, shares in the virtual world, and 35 million Moroccans in the streets, in jubilation, shouting with joy, from Tangier to Lagouira. The heroic feat of the Atlas Lions during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar resonated throughout Morocco and internationally: land of light, experiences, and magic.

From Marrakech, "between Atlas and secret gardens" and 7th best city to visit in the world in 2022 according to the Time Out Index, passing through "The blue pearl of the north", Chefchaouen, while wandering through the meanders of the alleys of the medina of Fes, "twelve centuries of history and craftsmanship", before reaching Ouarzazate, "the ultimate desert experience" and its beautiful kasbahs, witnesses to the ancestral history of a millennial country... At the sunrises of the dunes of Zagora and the destination of Dakhla, "the meeting of the desert with the sea".

All of Morocco, all Moroccans, vibrated, and the world with them, in a spontaneous and intense surge of euphoria.

The spectacular participation of the Moroccan team in the Qatar 2022 World Cup will forever remain in the annals of Moroccan football. Beyond the sporting achievement, the whole world discovered a country whose values were conveyed by its valiant Lions of the Atlas. Values of living together, Fair Play, joy of living, and hospitality.

A radiant presence of Morocco internationally, and an invitation to come visit and experience a lifetime.

Thanks to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, the world discovered a people passionate about football. Thousands of Moroccan supporters traveled to wholeheartedly encourage their national team: joy and pride were the watchwords of this grand event.

Football people: young people, seniors, women and children, all share an unconditional love for the round ball. The Casablanca derby opposing WAC to Raja, the two biggest football clubs in Morocco, is a perfect example. It is a unique moment where time stands still in the economic capital of the country.

Football field: The sublime Moroccan beaches, from the Mediterranean to the Atlantic, are the playground of millions of football enthusiasts. Football is present everywhere, in the alleys of all Moroccan cities, in the authentic villages and douars, in football clubs and academies, in stadiums with international standards, in every home and especially in the hearts of all Moroccans.

The warm welcome extended by His Majesty King Mohammed VI and by the people to the Heroes of the Nation who have honored the Moroccan flag reflects this communion around common values of passion, family, love, and pride in belonging to this Land of Light.

On is proud today to say that football is part of the intangible heritage of Morocco, a heritage that continues to renew and modernize, a heritage that reveals the light that Morocco holds and tells each visitor the story of the epic tales of its Atlas Lions, passed down from generation to generation.

Infrastructures

The exploits of the national team are not the result of chance. Under the aegis of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, Morocco has achieved a significant enhancement of its sports infrastructure, particularly in football. The Mohammed VI Football Academy, inaugurated by the Sovereign in 2010, is one of the main components of this Royal vision aimed at propelling the sports sector to the forefront. Equipped with world-class facilities, the Academy covers an area of 18 hectares. A true factory and nursery for great football champions, this center of excellence has produced high-level players performing in renowned clubs at both national and international levels. It complements other royal projects such as the Grand Stadiums of Marrakech, Fès, Tangier, Agadir, and Rabat. Stadiums worthy of the greatest infrastructures in the field and equipped with the latest technologies and equipment. In 2008, the National Company for the Realization and Management of Stadiums (SONARGES) was born, with the aim of making these stadiums places of life, capable of hosting all types of events, whether they are sports, professional, cultural, or artistic.

Proximity fields have come to crown this royal vision whose main axis is the promotion of sports practice. Launched in 2018, this major project plans the construction of 800 proximity fields, hundreds of which have already been created, particularly in rural areas. Children, young people, men, and women have been able to benefit from these modern infrastructures to engage in their favorite sport: football.

If today Morocco has risen to the top 4 of the best teams in the world, it is thanks to the proactive and visionary policy of His Majesty King Mohammed VI. An ambitious approach that has also contributed to the development and prominence of several tourist regions of the Kingdom.

Calendar

After obtaining the organization of the Africa Cup of Nations 2025, Morocco is now establishing itself as a major player on the global football scene. Its joint bid with Spain and Portugal has been selected by FIFA for the organization of the 2030 World Cup. The football federations of Morocco, Spain, and Portugal have expressed their intention to deliver a tournament that "strengthens the legacy of the FIFA World Cup, develops football, and will have a significant impact worldwide." In addition to securing the organization of the 2023 Club World Cup, which was a major success in terms of organization and football passion, these two initiatives consolidate the Kingdom's position as a preferred host country for large-scale sporting events. Morocco, with proven expertise in managing large-scale events, has also invested heavily in both human and material resources in its infrastructure, notably with the launch of the construction of the Benslimane stadium, among the largest stadiums in Africa, and the development of its tourist accommodation offer, the most extensive and comprehensive on the continent. Beyond these efforts, Morocco's footballing heritage and the passion that drives the country for this sport are strong guarantees of the success of these international projects.

Morocco is well prepared to meet all challenges and raise its flag at the upcoming sporting events. During the 2023 Women's World Cup, the Atlas Lionesses shone brightly, reaching the round of 16 and thus revealing their determination and fighting spirit. In Morocco, football is played in both male and female forms, a parity that King Mohammed VI ensures is applied in all areas. Because that is also Morocco, a country rich in its ancestral heritage, an open and modern country, and a generous people with "Niya" (Dir Niya, an expression rooted in the culture meaning good intention and good faith). Values of hospitality and living together that make the strength and reputation of the Morocco destination.

Training

There can be no development without humans and without a rise in skills. Morocco has understood this well. Since his accession to the throne in 1999, King Mohammed VI has given a very special place to human development, women, and youth. Ambitious strategies have been put in place, mobilizing significant budgets for the construction of modern infrastructures and centers of excellence in all fields. In this Royal vision, sport holds a prominent place.

Morocco is considered an African hub and a breeding ground for talent, not only thanks to its world-class sports facilities, such as the Mohammed VI Football Academy, the key to the Moroccan national team's success at the Qatar-2022 World Cup and the Great Stadiums, but especially due to the quality of training and player coaching. The Sport-Studies system of the Mohammed VI Football Academy has allowed several stars to emerge, such as: Youssef En-Nesyri, forward at Sevilla FC, Azzedine Ounahi, midfielder at Olympique de Marseille, Nayef Aguerd, defender for West Ham United, and Ahmed Reda Tagnaouti, goalkeeper at WAC Casablanca. Morocco shares its know-how and expertise with brother African countries. Coaches, referees, and players regularly undergo training in all areas there.related to sports.
